11+ Tips

  • Timing is important. Before beginning an exam, you should know how long you have to complete it. This information should be available on the admissions section of school websites. Practise timed papers!

  • If a question is slowing you down too much, move on and return to it. Listen to the examiner / look at the clock to work out how long you have left. Then think about if you need to adjust your pace.

  • Check your work. Try to leave enough time at the end of the test to return to trickier questions and find mistakes.

  • Don’t leave any questions blank. Having a guess is better than doing nothing.

  • Read the instructions carefully. How do they want you to answer? It may be underlining, circling or full sentences.

  • Check how many marks the question is worth. This way you know how much detail your answer needs to contain. Remember to show working out where it is needed.
